Why would the winner in a house raffle take the cash prize alternative instead of the grand prize home?

There are several reasons. The winner’s financial situation may dictate the need for money to pay off debts or even update their current home. Another reason is that with any winnings the IRS will tax the winner on the value of the prize. The winner may find it easier to pay the IRS taxes if they take the cash option instead of the home. In most cases the cash prize is less than the value of the home, but it’s ready money and some people who already have a home prefer cash.

In the most recent Desert Academy House Raffle, the winner of the grand prize home took the cash.  The owners of the grand prize home will offer the home at a discounted price for 30 days starting Feb. 5.
